Introducing the OFFSET Yoyo TITANs
By Brandon Vu
The start of the TITANS:
Since I joined OFFSETyoyo back in 2018, customers have been asking for a titanium yoyo. They wanted something ultra-premium, a titanium flagship that would stand apart. Being close with Jeffrey Pang, the founder of Luftverk — the company that popularised the modern titanium yoyo. He told me straight — titanium yoyos are a nightmare. They have more b-grades, insane production costs, and require specialised yoyo design expertise.
And back in 2018, I simply wasn't ready to undertake such a project. OFFSET was still a small and unknown brand. Creating something worthy of the Titanium price-tag felt outside my capabilities. So I put the dream on hold—for nearly six years.
Fast forward to 2024, OFFSET had come into its own. We learned a lot from building and perfecting our designs year after year. OFFSET was now my full-time commitment. I now felt confident we could produce a game-changing titanium design. So I called my now-business partner, Jeffrey Pang. Together, we set out to craft OFFSET's first titanium design.
Translating the Outlier into Titanium:
When deciding which design to translate into titanium, the obvious choice was our flagship competition yoyo the Outlier+.
The translation of OUTLIER+ into a titanium design went smoothly. When working with someone as experienced in titanium design as Jeff, he knows exactly what to do.
Whereas the OUTLIER+ pushed the boundaries of aluminium and stainless steel. When using titanium's high power-to-weight ratio, the design came out perfectly. From here, Jeff urged me to push the envelope and explore titanium stainless steel (TISS).
TISS yoyos are the most luxurious category of modern yoyos. They use the best materials, combined into a single design. The idea of such an ambitious project made me nauseous. But, Jeff urged me to prototype a design. If I didn't love it, we could always run with the original design.
By the end of the design process, I had two designs:
- DEVIANT TITAN: A mono-metal titanium yo-yo.
- OUTLIER TITAN: A titanium-stainless steel yo-yo
The TITAN Performance:
As fate would have it, I received the titanium prototypes while the entire OFFSET team was at my apartment, training for the 2024 World Yo-Yo Contest.
Allon and Xavier loved it. The DEVIANT TITAN was an instant hit. It was the same 66-gram weight as the DEVIANT+ but twice as stable and long-spinning. It was the first time I’d seen firsthand how game-changing the titanium material was. It unlocked a weight distribution I’d been chasing for years. A distribution that was impossible with a lighter, weaker material like aluminum.
But none of us were ready for the OUTLIER TITAN. Our target prototype weight was 66 grams, and the factory delivered as requested. However, the factory also accidentally created a prototype that weighed only 64 grams.
It took the OFFSET team less than a day to decide which one to mass-produce. The lighter OUTLIER TITAN was faster, yet more stable than the OUTLIER+. This mistake had pushed titanium and stainless steel to their limit. And unintentionally made the best-performing I'd ever tried. It was one of those rare intersections where competitive ideals meet a fun yoyo.
The Packaging:
For OFFSET, designing the game-changing titanium yo-yo was only half the battle.
We wanted an unboxing experience like no other. It had to be better than anything in the Yoyo community. We wanted our customers, who invested so much in our brand, to feel special.
I tasked Xavier with the project—and he delivered more than I could have imagined.
The TITAN unboxing experience aims to empower and inspire the person opening it. Inspired by other premium unboxing experiences. You must tear open the outer sleeve to reveal the inner white box. This non-reversible action is designed to bond the buyer with their respective TITAN.
The box includes a TITAN-engraved bearing removal tool, a custom OFFSETyoyo sleeve, and a white "Blue Print" string. Yes, it's the same Blueprint I used in 2015. This is an Easter egg for those of you who have read this far.
The packaging alone required multiple suppliers and much back-and-forth.
Finally, assembling everything required a long multi-stage process. Allon and I, (especially Allon). Spent days folding each sleeve, wrapping each yoyo string, and handling each bearing removal tool. And yes, we tested and tuned each yoyo.
We shipped all TITANs to Australia first. I wanted to ensure the quality of each yoyo before we shipped it to the U.S. for faster distribution. This long, laborious process took me back to the early days of OFFSETyoyo. It reminded me of how far we've come.
Final Word:
Ultimately, we designed the TITANS for the Yoyo community. I know my brand has become more "mainstream" in recent years. Some say I'm no longer the community-first yoyo reviewer I once was.
Either way, TITANS is my statement to the Yoyo community. That OFFSET remembers its roots. It can still re-imagine and redesign the next-gen professional yoyos.
This project was the culmination of patience, dedication, and, most importantly, teamwork. It took me six years to build a team that could produce these designs. The final result inspires both me and the OFFSET team.
For those lucky enough to buy one of these designs, thank you for your investment in the OFFSET brand. I hope you enjoy your TITAN and that it inspires you on your yoyo journey.
