What makes a yoyo a competition yoyo?
Stability and spin time. It has to survive a slightly off throw and still be spinning at the end of a long combo.
Is this overkill if I am not competing?
Only on price. These are easier to play than a beginner yoyo once your throw is straight, because they punish mistakes less.
Bimetal or monometal?
Bimetal puts the weight further out, so it spins longer and feels more stable. Monometal is lighter on the wrist and cheaper.
